When people ask me where I work, and I tell them ‘BL Hairdressing Training’,
everyone responds with, ‘Oh, you’re a hairdresser!’. No, I am not. BL
Hairdressing Training, very briefly, delivers hairdressing & barbering apprenticeships
to young people across the North East, think of us as a college. I currently
work within the admin team, as well as being the sole producer, creator,
designer (whatever you wish to call it) of the companies promotional marketing
materials. In January this year, I was asked to design the company’s annual
magazine, which is when I got my first real taste for graphic design; this was
my first big project.
The magazine took a good few months, collecting together information and stories, and finding my way around InDesign and was eventually published in July. Seeing the glossy magazine for the first time was a very proud moment. This, I suppose, was when I decided I wanted to pursue Graphic Design.
Take a look:
Looking back now, there are things I would have done differently
(for instance, using placeholders for images; you’ll never understand the
frustration of trying to resize all of the images freehand!!) and there are a
few mistakes throughout, but overall, it’s still my baby, imperfections and
all!
